Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic Course Application

Program Description
Paramedics provide care to emergency patients in and out of hospital settings and serve as links to other health care professionals. The Paramedic (EMT) Technology program is affiliated with St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck and subject to limited enrollment. BSC and St. Alexius collaborate to provide concurrent classes and clinical and field training. Coursework includes anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, pharmacology, airway and trauma management, cardiac and medical emergencies, and other specialized EMT training.

Instruction begins spring semester and continues for four semesters. Students earn a Program Certificate or an Associate in Applied Science degree in Paramedic (EMT) Technology. The national Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs accredits the program.

Preparation
EMTs and paramedics should be emotionally stable, able to carry heavy loads, and have good dexterity, agility, eyesight and accurate color vision. Work can be strenuous and stressful with irregular hours.

Program Requirements
Students who complete the curriculum requirements obtain a Program Certificate (43 credits) or an Associate in Applied Science degree (60 credits). Graduates are qualified to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians written and practical exams.

Application deadline is Sept. 15 and includes an interview and written exam. Other enrollment prerequisites are current certifications in CPR and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. A criminal background check may be required before clinical training begins.

Career Opportunities
Job Service North Dakota reports a bright outlook for emergency workers. Competition will be greater for jobs in local government, including police and fire departments, and with independent rescue squads, where pay and benefits are higher. Opportunities will be best for those with advanced education and certifications.

Additional Information
Clinical and field internship: Experiences are completed concurrently with the classroom schedule at different sites across North Dakota and South Dakota. Those include Bismarck's St. Alexius Medical Center, and medical facilities in Dickinson, Williston, Grand Forks and Watford City, N.D., Mobridge, S.D., and other approved hospital sites. Other approved facilities serve as in-hospital clinical sites. Paramedic field internship experiences are completed at Metro Area Ambulance Service, Dickinson Area Ambulance Service, Williston Ambulance Service, Mobridge Ambulance Service, and other approved field internship sites in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Licensure: All 50 states require licensure for EMTs and paramedics, but training levels and titles vary from state to state. License renewal is mandatory every two to three years, plus refresher courses or other continuing education may be required.
