 Steps to Applying for Financial Aid

Step 1: Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) with the Department of Education. The PIN allows the student and parent to sign applications and promissory notes electronically. The process will take approximately seven days to receive a PIN.

Step 2: Complete the admission application process through Bismarck State College.

Step 3: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after January 1st of each year. Priority funding deadline for some programs is March 15 of each year.

Step 4: If you complete your FAFSA electronically, you will receive an email within 5-7 days informing you that your application has been processed and how to access your Student Aid Report online. If you complete a paper FAFSA, you will receive a paper Student Aid Report within 3-4 weeks. You will want to check your SAR for accuracy. If there is an error you will need to make an electronic correction on the FAFSA web site or make the corrections on your paper SAR and return to the FAFSA processing center.

Step 5: If you are selected for verification, the BSC Financial Aid Office will request a copy of your tax return(s) and a verification worksheet.

Step 6: In late May or early June you will receive an award notice from BSC detailing the amounts and types of financial aid the college is offering you. You must complete, sign and return your award notice to the BSC Financial Aid Office.

Step 7: If you are receiving a student loan for the first time at Bismarck State College, you must complete the loan counseling session. Students can do this at any time.

Step 8: If you are receiving a student loan, you must complete the promissory note. A promissory note will either be sent via mail or emailed to the student.
 
  • If by mail, you must complete the entire promissory note and return it in the enclosed envelope.
 
  • If by email, you must go to the lender web site and complete, print and mail the promissory note to the lender, or complete and electronically sign with PIN and electronically return to the lender.

Step 9: Your excess financial aid check will be mailed to your home address. Or you can have your excess financial aid directly deposited into your personal checking or savings account. To have your excess financial aid direct deposit to your bank account please go to the following website: http://www.bismarckstate.edu/student/finaid/files/ach.pdf complete the form and return to the Business Office located in Schafer Hall Room 132.
