Tutor Credentials:
- Currently enrolled BSC student.
- Received an "A" or "B" in the BSC course(s) one wishes to
tutor.
- Recommended by an appropriate faculty member.
- Completed a successful interview with the Coordinator of
Academic Support Services.
Tutor Skills & Attributes:
- A tutor needs to demonstrate excellent time management
skills. A tutor must be able to balance one’s academic,
extra-curricular, and tutorial responsibilities.
- A tutor needs to be able to demonstrate excellent
organizational skills. A tutor must be able to assist tutee(s) in
organizing the completion of course assignments.
- A tutor needs to be a motivator. A tutor must be willing to
encourage their tutees to become better students. A tutor needs
to be able to hold them accountable for being prepared for
tutoring. A tutor also needs to motive them to be both verbally
and physically active during tutorial sessions.
- A tutor needs to be encouraging. A tutor must give praise
when success is attained.
- A tutor needs to be able to communicate well to a diverse
student population.
- A tutor must be able to be creative in order to explain
content material.
Responsibilities:
- Explain methods for studying a course.
- Give suggestions on how to study the text.
- Review the course outline, assignments and/or notes.
- Model good study behavior.
- Explain concepts the student finds difficult.
- Display courtesy and willingness to help.
- Check student's work to identify problem areas and make
suggestions for improving.
- Explain how to study for exams and how to identify topics
that probably will be covered.
- Adhere to procedures.
Duties:
- Attend all meetings, workshops, and training sessions
necessary to complete the 10 hours of tutor training required for
certification.
- Responsible for documenting actual tutoring experience.
- Tutor students one-on-one or in a group.
- Be on time for all tutoring sessions.
Compensation:
- Tutors are paid for scheduled tutorial times and for
attending CRLA tutor training sessions. Pay rates will be
discussed during the interview process.
Tutor Schedules:
- The Sykes Student Success Center is open Monday-Thursday,
8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Fridays, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
- Tutors are able to create their schedule within this time
frame or from 5:00-9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. All
tutoring takes place in the Sykes Student Success Center.
- The Sykes Student Success Center averages a tutorial staff of
15 per semester with tutors offering assistance 6-10 hours per
week.
- Please note that once you establish your tutoring schedule
you must be able to stick to it for the entire semester. (If
demand is low or non-existent, we may need to consider changing
times or cancellation of services.)
