COMPUTER VIRUS INFORMATION

The BSC Help Desk can assist employees with virus removal on BSC owned computers. If you suspect you have a virus, please call the Help Desk as soon as possible at 224-5442 so we can scan your computer for infections.

How did I get infected?
Although we have antivirus software installed on all BSC owned computers, it is still possible for malware, viruses and other unwanted programs to infect your computer if you visit an infected site or open an infected file.

What can I do if I have a virus on my home computer?
If you have a virus on your home computer or other non-BSC owned computer, although we cannot assist you with removing the virus, the following information may help you.

If you suspect you are infected with a virus, do a complete scan of your system using your antivirus software. If you do not have a current antivirus program, there are a number of good antivirus programs, both free and paid, available to help protect your home or personal computer.

Antivirus for Windows
The NDUS recommends using the free Microsoft Security Essentials program. Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your windows-based home and personal computers. It guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

You can download Security Essentials for free from Microsoft (Note: your PC must run genuine Windows Operating System in order to install the software).

Important: Make sure you remove any antivirus program you currently have installed, even if it is expired, before installing a new antivirus program.
Do not have more than one antivirus program installed and running on your computer. Having multiple antivirus programs running may cause crashes, conflicts and other system issues.

Visit Microsoft's Security Essentials FAQ section for more information on the program.

Note: In Windows 8, the Windows Defender antivirus program replaces Microsoft Security Essentials and is built-in to the operating system. If no other antivirus program is initially installed on your computer, Windows Defender will enable itself. If you initially had another antivirus program installed with your Windows 8 computer, then Windows Defender will be disabled. If your antivirus program expires at some point, and you wish to use Windows Defender in place of it, you must first remove that antivirus. Then you can open the Windows Defender program and click the "Turn On" button under the "Home" tab, which will enable protection.

Antivirus for Macintosh
Macintosh users are encouraged to install antivirus software on their personal computers.  ClamXav is a popular virus scanner for Mac OS X which can be downloaded for free from the ClamXav website.
Note: the version of ClamXav that is available through the Mac App Store does not have all the features that are available with the version on the ClamXav site.

Other free Macintosh antivirus programs are available including avast! Free Antivirus for Mac and Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition.

Additional Antispyware Resources
You can download free antispyware programs that you can run in addition to your antivirus program to help remove an infection (unlike having multiple antivirus programs installed, having more than one antispyware program installed will not cause system issues).

PLEASE NOTE: The BSC Help Desk is not able to assist with virus removal on non-BSC owned computers due to potential liability issues such as corrupted files and data loss.
