The BSC Library is open to the public. Borrowing privileges are available to BSC students, faculty, staff, and North Dakota residents.

LIBRARY CARD: THE KEY TO INFORMATION
A current BSC Library card is required to:
•  check out library materials,
•  access subscription databases from off-campus, and
•  use other services offered via the library's web site.

BSC Students, Faculty, and Staff
•  The BSC photo ID is your library card. The library card number (barcode) is on the back of the ID.
•  BSC photo IDs are made at the library during regular hours.
•  To obtain a BSC photo ID, present proof of identification (e.g., current driver's license) AND official
documentation of the NDUS User or EMPL ID ("W") number.
•  The charge for a replacement ID is $5.00.

BSC Distance Education Users (Students and Faculty)

Community Users
•  A current North Dakota driver's license (or similar proof of identification and residence in the state)
must be presented to obtain a library card.
•  Community users may check out materials owned by the BSC Library. Interlibrary loan privileges
are not available to community users.

Acceptance of a library card signifies agreement to follow library policies. The individual to whom the card is issued is responsible for any use made of the card.

LOAN PERIODS
General materials - 28 days
Media (DVDs, CDs, Videos) - 14 days
Reserve materials - Varies; loan periods set by individual instructors

Reference sources, archives materials, microfilm, magazines, journals, and newspapers generally do not circulate.

RENEWALS
Most materials can be renewed online. Sign in, then choose "My Account." Renewals may also be requested in person or by phone.

FINES & FEES
We do not assess fines for overdue materials, but expect materials to be returned by the due date and in good condition. When materials are three weeks late, they are considered lost and the borrower is billed. Library privileges are suspended until the matter is resolved. Failure to respond to notices will result in collection action and holds on college records.

The fee for lost or damaged materials is the full replacement cost of the item plus a $20 processing fee. The processing fee applies to each item lost or damaged.

LOST OR STOLEN CARDS
If your BSC photo ID or community library card is lost or stolen, report it to the library immediately.

arrow icon Reference Services

The Library staff is here to help you find the information you need and to teach you how to use library resources. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance. Your questions are important to us! The reference staff answers general questions about library use, factual questions about specific subject areas, and questions over the telephone. Click here to ask reference questions or request library information online. Please allow 24-48 hours for a response to your online reference question.

Library orientations and instruction are a service offered by Reference Services. Contact Johanna Bjork, Reference Librarian, at 701.224.5738 or email: Johanna.Bjork@bsc.nodak.edu to schedule instruction sessions or for other reference assistance.

arrow icon Course Reserves

Faculty may place materials on reserve to support course work. Because these materials are in high demand, they may only be used for limited amounts of time. Some instructors may specify that reserve materials for their classes are to be used only in the library or that they may not circulate overnight.

All materials on reserve in the Library can be found in ODIN under Reserves and Uncataloged Items. You will need your borrower's card to check out reserve materials. Ask for them at the circulation desk. Holds may not be placed on reserve items.

Fines for reserve materials are high because the materials are in demand by several users. Keeping a reserve item beyond the specified time may prevent other students from using required materials.

The contact person for reserve services is Laura Kalvoda, Library Associate, 701.224.5483 or Laura.Kalvoda@bsc.nodak.edu

arrow icon Technical Services

The Technical Services Department is committed to cataloging and making materials available for use as quickly as possible. The BSC Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system for our book, video, and media collections.

The main objectives of Technical Services are threefold:

  • Catalog and process newly acquired materials efficiently;
  • Establish and maintain current and valid name and subject headings in the ODIN catalog;
  • Ensure the integrity of bibliographic records and the accuracy of information about Library holdings through catalog management functions.

What's New at the Library is a list of newly acquired and cataloged materials which are available for patron use.

The contact person for technical services is Liz Mason, Technical Services Librarian, 701.224.5451 or Liz.Mason@bsc.nodak.edu

arrow icon Interlibrary Loan Services

No library can own all of the materials needs by its users. For that reason, interlibrary loan (ILL) services are available to BSC students, faculty, and staff if materials not available at the BSC Library are needed. There is no charge to library users for this service. The Library can borrow materials from other libraries in the United States for you to use. To initiate an ILL request, contact a librarian for assistance. You may also initiate ILL requests on ODIN.

Because there are significant costs involved in providing interlibrary loan services, the following guidelines and policies are in place to ensure that ILL services can be continued economically:

  • You must be a BSC student, faculty, or staff member.
  • Please use the resources of the BSC Library first when looking for information.
  • Click the following link to complete an ILL request and submit your request electronically: ODIN. Forms are also available at the reference desk.
  • Allow at least one week for the materials to arrive. If materials are being supplied by an out-of-state library, it may take much longer.
  • When your materials arrive, we will contact you by e-mail or phone for pick up at the BSC Library. A $5 per item fee will be charged for failure to pick up Interlibrary Loan materials.
  • Return ILL materials to the BSC Library circulation desk by their due dates. The lending library sets the loan period. Any late fines charged to us by the lending library will be passed on to the individual borrowers.
  • Requested materials will only be mailed to currently registered BSC students, faculty, and staff living outside Bismarck-Mandan or the surrounding area. Please allow extra time for mail delivery in your "need by date."

The contact person for interlibrary loan is Carolyn Twingley, Library Associate, 701.224.5503 or Carolyn.Twingley@bsc.nodak.edu
