What are academic advisers and will my student have one?
All students are assigned an academic advisor.  In most cases the advisor will be an instructor in the course of study which the student has chosen.  In addition to general advising on education and career plans, advisors assist the student with the registration process.

How can I track my daughter's or son's progress?
We encourage parents to be supportive of students and to talk with their daughter or son about their academic progress.  We also recognize that college is an important time for students to realize their independence and a sense of personal responsibility.  Due to confidentiality laws we are unable to share personal academic information with parents unless the student has formally instructed us to do so.  Although students may choose not to share all aspects of their academic life with their parents, students and parents alike often find the College experience is an exciting time for mutual growth and discovery.

How do undecided students know what they should be doing?
Many first-year students are not sure about a major.  The college experience is an important time for students to explore and discover new interests, strengths and possibilities.  Career Counseling Services personnel offer assistance to help BSC students make informed decisions about career and educational goals, using a variety of resources to explore possible careers. After completing the self-assessment, occupational information, interest inventories, and a Job Shadow experience, the student will move toward selecting a major.

How will my son or daughter know which courses to enroll in to meet the requirements for a degree?
Your son or daughter should schedule an appointment with his/her academic adviser to determine the appropriate classes for the next semester.  It is the student's responsibility to schedule advisor appointments.

What is a typical course load for a freshman?
An average course load for a full-time student is usually 14-16 credit or 5 courses per semester.  If a student has a weak academic background, or is working part-time for 15-20 hours a week, or is involved in time consuming extra-curricular activities, they will be advised to take a reduced load.  A student taking a full load should expect to spend at least 45-50 hours a week for class time and studying.  To be considered as a full-time student, a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Where should my student go if she/he is having problems with course work?
The student can obtain help from a number of individuals or resources, depending on the problem:

The professor teaching the course.  Faculty post and keep office hours and may also be available before or after the lectures.  They can also be contacted via email or telephone.

Tutors are available to help students in selected courses (chemistry, computer science, math, accounting, sciences, English).  Tutoring services are available on a walk-in basis in the Sykes Student Success Center located on the 3rd floor of the Jack Science Center.  There is no charge for tutoring services.

Forming study groups with classmates help students get to know one another and to develop friendships and opportunities for studying together.

Should my student work while in college?
There is no simple answer to this question.  Much depends on the student's credit load, financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities, and family responsibilities.  Being a full-time student is the equivalent of working full time.  To do well academically, students must get plenty of rest in order to be alert and receptive during class.  The more outside work a student has, the less time is available for academic study.  If a student must work 40 hours a week, then it would be best to take only one or two courses per semester.  If your student must work, a job on campus is preferable to one off campus.

Should I buy my student a computer and what is the availability of computers in residence halls and on campus?
It isn't essential that your student own a personal computer because BSC provides computational facilities for students.  However, it is very helpful for students to have a personal computer. There are several computer labs and classrooms available for student use on the BSC campus.
