Renewable Generation Program Begins Fall 2010 Semester

Bismarck State College (BSC) will offer a new program in Renewable Generation Technology beginning in August. The program, available on campus and online, is designed to provide students with a broad background in the electrical generation industry and prepare them for high paying positions in emerging generation areas.

Kari Knudson, vice president of BSC's National Energy Center of Excellence (NECE), said the Renewable Generation program is a natural extension of the Power Plant Technology program, which has been serving the energy industry for over 30 years.

"Students will learn about the fundamentals of power generation and then will expand into the renewable generation aspect," said Knudson.

The program builds on a foundation of courses already in place at BSC by adding specialized courses in biomass, hydro, wind, solar, tidal, geothermal, and fuel cell generation of electricity.

Dan Schmidt, program manager, NECE, said the college is working with industry to develop the curriculum for the second year of classes. "We are also forming an advisory committee of leaders from the renewable generation field
to continue with curriculum development in this evolving field," he said.

Students can earn a certificate or an associate in applied science degree. The program will be located within BSC's NECE, where it joins five established energy technology programs and the Energy Management bachelor's degree program.

General Wesley Clark to Address Energy Summit

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) recently announced that General Wesley Clark, one of the leading executives in renewable energy, has been added as a featured speaker at the upcoming 2010 Renewable Energy Action Summit, June 13-14.

"General Clark is a well-known figure throughout the world and is a leader in America's renewable energy industry," Dorgan said. "His participation is a very exciting addition to this event, and I'm pleased he'll be a part of the conversation about how we drive North Dakota's renewable energy industry into the future."

Energy industry stakeholders, elected officials and educators from around the region will gather on June 14 at Bismarck State College for the 2010 Renewable Energy Action Summit to discuss North Dakota's role in America's renewable energy future. The summit will emphasize the importance of reducing America's dependence on foreign oil, increasing energy diversity, expanding job creation and be an opportunity to showcase the latest innovations in energy development.

Dr. Kristina Johnson, the U.S. under secretary of energy at the Department of Energy (DOE), will also be a keynote speaker. Dr. Johnson plays a critical role in managing the nation's renewable energy programs as a part of her duties at the DOE.

The 2010 Renewable Energy Action Summit is open to the public. To register, visit www.bismarckstate.edu/energysummit. The cost is only $35.

Dorgan will co-host this event with the Great Plains Energy Corridor office, Bismarck State College, the North Dakota Alliance for Renewable Energy, and engineering firm Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson.

Reynold MillerNECE Employee Spotlight - Reynold Miller

Reynold Miller joined the NECE team in May to help develop the new Renewable Generation Technology program.

Miller brings over 20 years of experience with electric motors and controls, generators, hydraulics, electrical and electronics repair and most recently was working at Suzlon Wind Energy in Rugby, North Dakota.

Miller was excited to join the NECE team as an instructor and said, "Teaching is something I have always wanted to do.  This opportunity came about and it brought me to where I wanted to be."

"The renewable energy industry has a very bright future and will see growth in all areas.  I think for this reason it will be very important to have a very flexible program to adjust for changes in technology and job growth areas.  Students can look forward to obtaining jobs in commercial wind, solar and in many other areas.  The positions will not only be in operations and maintenance but also in manufacturing, engineering, sales and management.  North Dakota is a hub for energy production and the future is very promising."

Miller is a Bismarck, North Dakota, native and a Bismarck State College 1990 alumnus with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Electronics.  He has an 11-year-old daughter and a 10- year-old son.  He enjoys reading, running and working out in the gym as much as possible.

Welcome, Reynold!
