Verification Q and A

What is Verification?
Verification is a process used to verify certain information on the FAFSA to ensure its accuracy. Some students are selected for verification by the U.S. Department of Education. Others are selected by the school.

Why is your file being verified?
There are several possibilities for being selected for FAFSA verification. Keep in mind that more possibilities exist, but the following are the main reasons for being selected:
You were selected randomly.
The submitted FAFSA application has incomplete data.
The data on the FAFSA application appears to contradict itself.
The FAFSA application has estimated information on it.

How will I know I have been selected?
Typically, students can expect to receive email notification sent to students communication tab on CampusConnection Portal. This can be found by logging onto CampusConnection Portal and looking at "student communications" and the "to do list".

If you received the Financial Aid Verification Notice you will need to follow the steps outlined in that communication to complete your file - as well as any required Forms.
The type of documents required will vary from student to student, and not all students selected for FAFSA verification will have to submit the same documents. Do not turn in any documentation that was not requested.

How do I verify my income?
If you have filed your taxes with the IRS, you should log into your FAFSA and make a correction to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to update your tax information.  If you do not, or cannot, use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will be required to obtain a tax transcript from the IRS and submit it to the Office of Student Financial Assistance. Personal copies of tax returns can no longer be accepted.

     1. IRS DATA RETRIEVAL-Log onto your FAFSA and make corrections. Go to the income section of the FAFSA and                 use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. By selecting to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool this will allow you to transfer                     your 2013 IRS Tax information over to your 2014-2015 FAFSA.

Those not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval include:
Married couples who file separate tax returns.
Those whose marital status has changed since January 1 of the application processing year.
Those who filed an amended return.

      2. ONLINE PDF REQUEST - Available on the IRS Web site. In the Tools section of the homepage click "Get                               Transcript of Your Tax Records" and then click "Get Transcript ONLINE" and create an Account. Click                         "Continue" and answer questions in Step 4-6. In the Type of Transcript field, select "Return Transcript" and                    in the Tax Year field, select the year, and click Print.  If you filed an amended return (1040X) after your original                  return, print "Tax Return Transcript" and "Account Transcript".

**When requesting the transcript, it is important that the address you use is the same as on your last                         Federal Tax Return, unless you have since done a change of address with the IRS.

     3. ONLINE MAIL REQUEST - Available on the IRS Web site.  In the Tools section of the homepage click "Get                            Transcript of Your Tax Records" and then click "Get Transcript by Mail".  Click "Continue" and in the Type                of Transcript field, select "Return Transcript" and in the Tax Year field and select the year.  If you filed an                        amended return (1040X) after your original return, print "Tax Return Transcript" and "Account Transcript".

**When requesting the transcript, it is important that the address you use is the same as on your last                        Federal Tax Return, unless you have since done a change of address with the IRS.

     4. IRS TELEPHONE REQUEST - Available from the IRS by calling 1-800-908-9946.

What happens if there are discrepancies in the application?
After you turn in all required documents, the Financial Aid Office will compare them with your Student Aid Report. If errors are found, corrections will be made. If the errors are significant enough to change the amount of financial aid that you were awarded, the Financial Aid Office will send you a revised award notification showing increased or decreased amounts.

If you are selected for FAFSA verification, you need to return the information and requested documentation as soon as possible. Processing usually takes two to three weeks, but it can take longer during the peak season. Because verification must be completed in advance of disbursing any money from any financial aid program, it is vital to send complete and correct information as quickly as possible. Above all else, don't be upset because you were selected for verification. This is a process that is required by the federal government. The Financial Aid Office may even discover errors in your report that could actually increase your eligibility for more aid.
