2013 ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR
The BSC National Alumni Association is pleased to honor William Goetz, '64, for his professional achievements in North Dakota higher education and public service.
Goetz most recently served as chancellor of the North Dakota University System after a distinguished 30-year career at Dickinson State University and 10 years as chief of staff for two North Dakota governors. He served 20 years in the state Legislature and was assistant majority leader in both chambers.
Goetz taught at DSU in the School of Business and Management from 1967-1997. Besides teaching , he held appointments as the business school's chief academic officer, the DSU Foundation's executive vice president and as director of continuing education.
At DSU, Goetz acted on his belief that colleges should collaborate with business to foster student learning relevant to the workplace. He developed curriculum, financial support, student trips and internships to study businesses in North Dakota and elsewhere. Goetz helped establish Business Challenge at DSU in cooperation with a statewide business organization that linked students with business leaders during a summer conference. His work in business education earned him the North Dakota Educator of the Year award from the Greater North Dakota Chamber in 1990.
During his five years as NDUS chancellor, Goetz initiated and nurtured better communication and cooperation between the state's 11 campuses and its presidents. His office developed a dialogue with the state's tribal colleges that led to solutions in course credit and student transfer. Under his tenure, two-year colleges began to align with four-year universities to provide remedial education on their campuses.
Goetz has a MA in business from the University of North Dakota and BA in business administration from Minot State University. He grew up in rural Hazen and lives in Bismarck with his wife, Marion. They have two sons, a daughter and two grandsons.

2013 RISING STAR AWARD
BSC's Rising Star award recipient has a lifelong passion for creating art. He channels his artistic spirit in his work as director of youth ministries at Charity Lutheran Church in Bismarck.
At age 35, Sam Coleman, '99, has achieved a level of professional artistry uncommon for his age. His appreciation for beauty and the grandeur of nature was ingrained in childhood through outdoor activities with family and watching his mother and grandmother paint. He did his first watercolor at age seven, later competing in 4-H, local arts show and the Junior Federal Duck Stamp contest.
He tried on a couple of career ideas, including being a paramedic in Michigan and combining health education with art classes at BSC, deciding after graduation to enroll at The Atelier art school in Minneapolis. While earning his certificate there over three years, he also attended Magdalen College nights and week-ends. His seminary study culminated in a bachelor's degree in biblical studies and ordination as a licensed minister.
Coleman returned to Bismarck and began his career as a professional artist, entering art shows and earning People's Choice, Governor's Choice and Juror's awards at the 2008 Bismarck Arts & Galleries exhibit. Coleman teaches art workshops and is preparing for a one-man show in November. An avid photographer, Coleman also has developed his skills into a business with his wife. S2 Photography in Mandan specializes in outdoor and family photography.
Nine years ago, he decided to volunteer at Charity Lutheran, which led to the job he has now, advising and designing faith-based activities for your people.
A native of Bismarck, Sam lives in Mandan, with his wife, Sara. Their family is growing with Gabriel, 3, Cassia, 1, and an expected child in August.
