Program Description Students in the Mass Communication program become proficient in digital media and participate in real world experiences as mobile journalists. The curriculum provides background in the journalism/mass communication profession and conveys the importance and responsibility of presenting accurate information. Courses cover ethical writing skills, news photography, print publication, Web publication, and video production. The program offers hands-on experience working the Mystician, BSC's student print and online newspaper, and its broadcast component, MystiCast.
Preparation Students planning to study mass communication should have an interest in writing and the potential to communicate information obtained by observation and interview. Other helpful characteristics are curiosity, eye for detail and desire to learn by reading and talking to others. Background in English, writing, computers and photography is helpful.
Program Requirements Completion of the program requirements leads to an Associate in applied Science degree and offers students flexibility for immediate employment. Students interested in transfer to a four-year institution can complete an Associate in Arts degree with careful selection of elective courses.
BSC has cooperative agreements with Dickinson State University and Minot State University and several other four-year institutions that allow students to continue with a bachelor's degree on the BSC campus. Those transferring to other institutions should consult the catalog of the transfer school and modify BSC's suggested curriculum where necessary.
Contact your BSC advisor for assistance with transfer planning.
