East Coulee Student Design Contest    Deadline August 31, 2012
East Coulee
What is the East Coulee Project? The restoration of the East Coulee at BSC to natural prairie and wetland will begin with a student design contest. Student design teams are asked to create a plan that will restore the coulee to its natural status, incorporate an ADA compliant trail and educational signage, as well as promote environmental and artistic literacy through the incorporation of sculptures.

Who is eligible? This contest is open to all BSC students and high school seniors planning to attend BSC in Fall 2012.

What are the guidelines?
  • All qualifying designs must be submitted by a team of students.
  • The design should encompass the entire area including the hillsides, woody draw and the wetland.  Boundaries are delineated by this Wetlands Map.
  • The design must restore the prairie and wetland using only North Dakota native plants while promoting high quality habitat for local wildlife.
  • The trail must be ADA compliant. (Link not yet available.)
  • All design considerations should require minimal maintenance and last for at least 10 years.
  • The design must incorporate areas for sculpture installation.
        Specimen gardens/sculpture pads

  • The minimum garden size should be 36 ft. sq.
  • The shape of the garden and position of the pad within the garden is at the discretion of the designer(s). The plant(s) selected for the garden is at the discretion of the designer(s) but must come from the plant resources list provided.
  • The specimen gardens should be level.
  • Terracing and other forms of soil retention are appropriate.
  • Terrace design and materials are at the discretion of the designer(s).
Trail Specifications
  • An ADA compliant trail must be included in the design.
  • The design of trail should promote an environmental and artistic experience tying the specimen gardens, the sculptures, the wetland and topography together while maximizing the aesthetic quality of the site.
  • The trail design and materials must prevent erosion.
  • The trail design must maximize the educational opportunities for the community and students.
Designers should consider
