PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

Assessment of student learning consists of three basic activities: determining what we want students to learn, measuring their performance against the criteria, and analyzing the assessment results.

Program assessment occurs at a level above course-level assessment. Program outcomes must align with the mission and goals of the College. To know how well BSC is meeting its mission, we must be sure that we know how well students are meeting program-level outcomes.

The Faculty Assessment Handbook for technical programs outlines nine basic steps in the program assessment process. They are:
  1. determine what you want students to know or be able to do at the completion of your program
  2. develop approximately five to eight student learning outcomes for the program and map your outcomes to the courses in the program
  3. identify the methods (measures) you will use to determine if students have met the learning outcomes
  4. determine the criteria that will indicate successful attainment of the student learning outcome
  5. assess the outcome on a regular basis
  6. complete an assessment plan using the form template
  7. complete the assessment activities
  8. report your assessment results using the TracDat summary report
  9. take action and make program improvements.
More details and the assessment forms are included in the Faculty Assessment Handbook. Forms can also be accessed on this webpage. For questions and additional help contact your program assessment leader or the Effectiveness and Assessment Coordinator using the Contacts (Assessment) section.
