Assessment Cycle
ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT

Academic Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning.  It is a key indicator of institutional effectiveness and a vehicle for improvement.  The general steps of the academic assessment cycle are to:
  • Determine expectations, or learning outcomes
  • Determine appropriate criteria and standards for learning quality
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret evidence to determine performance levels
  • "Close the loop" by using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance.

Assessment asks faculty to think about the following:
  • What should students be learning?
  • What are students actually learning?
  • What should faculty be doing to facilitate student learning?

Answering these questions enables faculty to build stronger courses and programs. It also helps improve communication on campus, assist in making better academic and administrative decisions, and identify good teaching.
